Cool Vibes in Delaware
Tucked into a strip mall on Kirkwood highway on the fringes of Wilmington DE, is a new and vibrant cigar lounge. E Squared Cigars brings new energy to Friday nights with a spacious lounge, great drinks, a DJ and cool vibes.
Omar is one of only two African American cigar shop owners I’ve come across in the past two years. He has a lengthy background in sales from the financial services industry and he has bought this business acumen (attention to detail and understanding how to meet the needs of customers) to his shop.
I can breathe
I don’t care how beautiful your lounge is or how great your cigar selection is. If I can’t breath, I’m out. E Squared is a wide opened lounge with good air circulation but the furniture is arranged so that multiple groups an pairings of people can seek out and have more intimate conversations.
There are plenty of cigar choices on the large humidors (separated by strength) to appeal to every level of cigar smoker. As they are a year old, much of the focus is on more familiar brands like Alec Bradley, Romeo and Julietta, Cohiba, Ashton and DBL.
Don’t sleep on his house blend either. It’s fantastic!
Omar’s strategy to expand the selection is, just like Omar, well thought out and disciplined. He has brought in other blenders to his First Friday events. There, he has an opportunity to introduce current and potential members to more blends. Favorites are added. Blends that don’t do so well are cut loose.
Solid thinking even though he has plans to expand the humidor.
Additional First Friday activities include a hot mike where people are allowed to introduce themselves and their product or services in a smoking networking session.
A DJ is usually on hand and comedians round out some of the entertainment options.
Ahh, the bar!
Further back and away from the entrance is the tiny bar. There is a surprisingly wide and qualitative selection of spirits to choose from.
Again, Omar’s discipline and business savvy is on display. Don’t believe me?
Try the house sangria.
“I’m not a bartender” Omar tells me during our interview. “I just felt I needed something to drink that the women could enjoy”. Understanding the growing appeal of cigars to women, Omar and his wife decided to create a house drink.
They experimented with multiple recipes until they came up with a mix that was easy to execute consistently that reflected the vibrancy of the lounge. Enter their white sangria. It is a flavorful drink served in a carafe with fresh fruit floating around the neck.
It’s not only excellent. It fits! It’s a perfect drink for a swank club environment with the highest ratio of female smokers of any shop I frequent.
If you are in the area or transiting between Baltimore and Philly, don’t take the I-495 bypass. Stay on I-95, turn on your GPS and key in “E Squared Cigar Lounge”.
Tell them Brother Charles sent you!
