When a woman goes out to spend $50 at a hair salon, nobody blinks an eye. Everybody understand that this is something that women do and we don’t give the matter a second thought; until they come home. When they do, they’re confident, beautiful and positive. So when I got the tab for my first shave at Tailor Made Barber Lounge, I finally got it. And now, whenever I go to Indianapolis, I never fail to make an appointment at this place.
For 75 minutes I was tilted back with a warm towel over my eyes and two machines blowing steam across my face. I was listening to smooth jazz in the background. I could feel my barbed wire whiskers loosening up from the steam. My back didn’t hurt. The frown on my brow was gone and a smile quietly crept across my face. I was relaxed and for that hour and 15 minutes didn’t have a care in the world. Vernon didn’t just give me a shave. He put my head through a process.
Vernon’s carefully orchestrated steps resulted in a smooth face from the crown of my head to my chinny chin chin. There were moisturizers, warm lather and precision strokes that gently scraped away the hair and gray that made me look five years older than I actually am. Each step in the process prepared my face for the next stage. The Master Craftsman was patient and precise ensuring that my face was covered in a steaming hot towel so that none of the softening gained by the two steam machines was ever lost.
I was relaxed and for that hour and 15 minutes didn’t have a care in the world.
It took over 33 years to accumulate the skills and knowledge to transform a worn-out old dude into an energetic man ready for a night on the town. That is exactly what Vernon had done. This is what he does! “I’ve always wanted to be a Barber” he explains later that evening through the smoke of a Nat Sherman Timeless Churchill that we picked up at Blend Cigar Bar on the north side if Indianapolis near the Fashion Mall. “Growing up, barbers wore the nicest clothes. They knew everybody in the neighborhood and drove fine cars” he further explains.
His path to success wasn’t a direct path either. “I served in the Army at Fort Benning” he says. He also explained some of the left and right turns that occurred in his life that in some ways delayed his arrival to his dream job but in other ways ensured he would get there. Vernon is a focused man and this is demonstrated in the care he takes with his customers.
He began work at earning his credentials and now has a shop that is second to none. You can sit down at the table and enjoy a coffee, soda or bottled water while you wait. The place is always clean and Vernon is always immaculate. Our conversations are never centered on sports. We talk about business, cigars and family…. when I’m awake. Vernon’s technique allows him to do both my head and face while I am fully reclined in the chair. I usually spend some portion of our time asleep.
Vernon also has a concierge service. He offers his full range of services (for groups) at the venue of your choosing. I’ve got my eye on him to provide shaves for groomsmen if any of my daughters ever decide to get married. Vernon has also hosted shave instructional socials with bourbon and cigars. Like many professionals, he is not just interested in profiting from his knowledge, he is willing to share it as well. He believes every man should have a good shave and instructs on the proper technique and tools.
Vernon just understands that he has perfected his skills to a level where you will prefer him than doing it on your own at home. Once he had finished I felt like 1 million bucks and I looked five years younger. Visit Taylor Made in Indianapolis. You must schedule an appointment. Its always a great experience.Tailor Made Barber Lounge 1265 W 86th St
